How Does It Work?

The ResurFX fractional laser stimulates the production of new collagen and elastic fibers in the deeper layers of the skin. Abundance of collagen and elastin are the keys to a youthful appearance and to repair damage to the skin such as stretch marks and acne scars. Non-ablative means that it does not destroy or ablate the skin cells. The goal is to deliver laser energy deeper without overheating the top layer of the skin. Other treatments like CO2 laser work by removing or ablating the top layer of the skin forcing new skin to develop. CO2 lasers have their place and are very effective but not without several days or more with peeling, crusting and significant swelling after the procedure. Non-ablative rejuvenation uses fractionated laser energy to produce columns of heat in the dermis of the skin, directing energy beneath the surface to maximize collagen production while keeping the top layer of the skin intact. This is one of the main reasons it is appropriate to treat all skin types.

What Should I Expect?

Dr. Marsala or one of her aestheticians will first apply a topical anesthetic to all treatment areas. You will be able to relax in the MD Boutiques treatment room for an hour while the anesthetic takes full effect so we can deliver the most effective treatment settings.

Next Dr. Marsala will input settings best suited for your skin type as well as concerns. She will guide a handheld device across the area of treatment. The laser delivers heat to a certain depth of the skin and the sensation is hot and prickly but is manageable due to the topical anesthetic.

The laser energy creates small channels down through the epidermis, or top layer of skin, down into the dermis, the skin’s second and deeper layer. The body perceives the microscopic perforations as a wound and responds by delivering new skin cells to repair the wound as well as stimulating the production of collagen and elastic fibers.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Immediately following the treatment you may experience some redness or swelling depending on your customized treatment settings. Minor irritation similar to a mild sunburn may develop. During the healing time, we advise you to stay out of direct sunlight and SPF 30 or higher is necessary to help protect your skin.

Are There Any Side Effects?

No clinical side effects have been reported to date. Patients may notice mild swelling or redness post-treatment but in general, there is little to no downtime.
