About IPL

If you struggle with how your facial skin appears because of dark spots, fine lines, or sun damage, MD Boutiques at Pine Creek can perform a skin analysis at our Colorado Springs, CO medical spa to determine if you qualify for IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy. A photofacial with IPL is a skin rejuvenation treatment for adult men and women with hyperpigmentation or wrinkle issues on their neck and face. A photofacial is considered a noninvasive process; however, it can be highly effective and create great outcomes. Our Lumenis® M22™ platform uses intense pulses of light energy that heat the skin cells to ignite the natural healing process and increase the production of collagen. It is safe for all skin tones, and over time, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with an improved tone and fewer dark spots.

Ideal Candidates

IPL reaches the deeper layers of your skin to improve several complexion concerns (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with minimal or no downtime. Candidates for IPL at MD Boutiques at Pine Creek will have a combination of concerns with their complexion, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, wrinkles, visible pores, redness, freckles, melasma, sun and age spots, or broken capillaries. At your free consultation, we will examine your complexion to determine if you could benefit from IPL.

Procedure Technique

IPL is performed at our Colorado Springs, CO medical spa in around 20 – 30 minutes in our private procedure rooms. To prepare for the process, we will wash and dry your skin before protecting your eyes with special laser shields. The IPL is performed using a handheld wand that will be passed over the skin while emitting laser energy pulses. Though some patients may have mild discomfort throughout the IPL, it's usually bearable given the short duration of the procedure.

What to Expect

There usually is no downtime needed with an IPL photofacial, but you may leave our office with your complexion a little red and inflamed. This will decrease naturally as the day continues — it may be masked with cosmetics if you prefer. MD Boutiques at Pine Creek advises you to keep a cream on your skin's surface to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to help ease swelling. Over the course of 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake away. It is crucial to protect your skin with sunscreen as often as possible after an IPL photofacial and to not pick at your skin. While you will have some visible improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple IPL treatments. We suggest that most patients get 3 – 6 sessions, performed every four weeks, at MD Boutiques at Pine Creek.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IPL cost?
All patients and complexions are different, so the cost of your IPL will depend on your unique situation. MD Boutiques at Pine Creek offers monthly specials and takes several forms of payment. At your initial consultation, we will estimate your cost and decide on how many treatments you will need for your best results.

How fast does IPL work?

While each patient responds differently to the treatment, and sometimes even to each treatment received, some improvements are typically visible immediately after each session. However, the real results are gradual, and the reduction of redness, blotchiness, sunspots, and age spots will happen over time. Most patients' overall results are apparent about a month after they finish the full treatment series.

What possible side effects does IPL have?
The most common side effects are minor, like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. You should be feeling better and healing up within a day or two. The procedure itself does not cause sun sensitivity, but excessive exposure to the sun, like tanning, will adversely affect your results. Always wear high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin. Sun exposure can cause the appearance of redness, wrinkles, sun spots, and cancer.

How should I prepare for IPL?

Typical recommendations for patients before they have an IPL treatment include avoiding significant sun exposure, self-tanners, and use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, or Retin-A/Renova for about a month prior to the procedure. Your doctor may also recommend that you take aspirin or ibuprofen for several days before the procedure in order to decrease chances of bruising.

Why do I need so many sessions?

Having a series of IPL Photo Rejuvenation sessions allows your results to be a gradual, natural-looking enhancement, while also ensuring the safety of the health of your skin. Your results will also last longer from undergoing multiple sessions.
