Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

The above pictures are a result of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation on Fitzpatrick type 4 skin.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin makes extra melanin after injury or irritation.

In this case, I demo-ed a lip wax for my aesthetician academy, not taking in consideration that the retinol in my skin care regimen would be a contraindication.

The skin above my lip was stripped exposing vital skin cells, resulting in severe inflammation. As the days progressed my lip began to scab and darken!

In attempts to reduce the hyperpigmentation I implemented ZO brightening crème and ZO pigment reducing serum with 4% hydroquinone into my daily routine.

Strict adherence to sunscreen was an integral part of recovery as well.

Within four to five days my skin began to lighten where the dark areas occurred.

The last picture was taken on week three post- product usage and the hyperpigmentation is no longer visible. Waxing while using retinoids can lead to scaring and discoloration, always plan ahead if you are considering a wax service.
