Sculptra: Reenergize Your Skin’s Potential

Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane have become very popular in recent years and for good reason. Their ability to instantly transform the face through injecting Hyaluronic Acid based solutions was a monumental development in the aesthetic world. It’s widely known, and even implied in the name itself “dermal filler”,that these products work by injecting various gel-like substances into specific parts of the face to not only minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and give fullness to certain areas but to also restore structure. But did you know that there is also a product that will stimulate your own body’s ability to produce collagen for the same effect?

WHAT IS SCULPTRA?

Sculptra is an FDA approved injectable dermal filler that has been around since 1999.

The main ingredient in Sculptra is a biocompatible (or material that is compatible with the human body and not harmful to living tissue), biodegradable synthetic poly-L-lactic acid or PLLA. It is classified as a collagen stimulator that helps restore the deep underlying structure of the skin to diminish facial wrinkles and folds.

It provides long lasting, natural looking results that can last up to 2 years.

HOW DOES SCULPTRA WORK?

Sculptra is injected into the skin and works with your body within the deep dermis to help revitalize collagen production and over time, helps restore your skin’s inner structure and volume resulting in a softer and more youthful appearance.

As the PLLA microparticles are gradually and naturally absorbed by the body, they help rebuild lost collagen. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.

You may notice immediate results but it can take a few months to see full results of your treatment. Results last up to 2 years.

The number of injection appointments and the number of injections per appointment vary from person to person, depending on how much collagen has been lost. Dr. Marsala will work with you to determine the number of treatment sessions needed to achieve the best results. The average regimen is 3 injections spread out over a period of 3 to 4 months.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER APPOINTMENT:

Mild swelling and bruising is to be expected but should subside within a few days. Most people can get back to their regular schedule immediately following the appointment. Applying a cold pack a few minutes at a time for the first 24 hours can help.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

Rule of 5's: Massage the areas injected for 5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days. We want to keep the particles dispersed in the tissue rather than having too much build up of collagen in one area.

PREPARATION BEFORE APPOINTMENT:

Avoid taking the following medications a few days before the treatment to reduce bruising.

  • Any type of anti inflammatory medication such as Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aleve, etc.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR SIDE EFFECTS?

In a clinical trial, the most reported side effects were:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness

  • Injection site pain

  • Bruising and bleeding

  • Itching and lumps

Some people may develop lumps under the skin and skin discoloration. In a 2015 study, the reported incidence of nodule formation associated with Sculptra was 7-9%. This appears to be related with the depth of injection, highlighting the importance of finding a skilled professional. Dr. Marsala is available for consultations to discuss if Sculptra is right for you. Please call MD Boutiques Med Spa 719 282 7782 for more information.
